Today, it is the largest public research university in Bangladesh, with a student body of 33,000 and a faculty of 1,800. It was identified by AsiaWeek as one of the top 100 universities in Asia.

The culture of private universities in Bangladesh started in the early 1990s. During that period, the government felt that the existing public universities were not sufficient to meet the demand for tertiary education in the country. Moreover, to maintain their quality of education, most of the public universities in Bangladesh kept themselves selective and as a result, each year a large number of students failed to get admitted into higher educational institutions.

In 2014, the university had 16,781 students, 755 teachers, and 1,430 other employees.It holds 3rd position in public University ranking several times. On 2 March 2014, Farzana Islam, a professor of the Anthropology Department, was appointed the vice-chancellor of JU, marking the country's first woman to hold the position.

The Bangladesh University of Textiles, abbreviated as BUTEX, and informally called as the Textile College". Though the institution was established as a fully functional university on the 22nd of December, 2010 by an ordinance of the Ministry of Education, Government of Bangladesh. Approximately 3,200 students are enrolled each year, where around 37% of them are women. Since the introduction of bachelor's level Honors degree program, about 17,000 students have attained the BSc in Textile Engineering, BSc in Textile Technology and BSc in Textile Management degrees from this higher educational institution.

This university has the largest campus among Bangladeshi universities. The academic activities of the university formally began on 18 November 1966. It is the only university in Bangladesh where student politics is not allowed.
