BAU's research in agriculture has made it well recognised across Asia.[citation needed] It also have a very low teacher-student ratio.

Islamic University, Bangladesh, commonly known as Islamic University, Kushtia (Bengali: ইবি), is one of the six major public research and PhD granting universities in Bangladesh and largest seats of higher education in the south-west part of the country. It is financially aided by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and financed by the Government of Bangladesh through University Grants Commission, Bangladesh. On 22 November 1979, the foundation of the Islamic University was set up in Kushtia, and it is operated under the Islamic University Act of 1980.

The university offers courses like MD, PhD, MS, MPhil, MDS, Diploma and FCPS. There is no undergraduate medical or dental course.

It is located at South Salna, in Gazipur District. It is 9.5 kilometres (5.9 mi) from Gazipur Chowrasta, just east of the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway.

Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) (Bengali: মাওলানা ভাসানী বিজ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) is the 12th government-financed public university and 2nd science and technology specialized public university in Bangladesh specializing in science, technology, and business. It is named after the charismatic political leader Mawlana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani. The medium of instruction is English. Every year, almost 800 (currently 795) students are enrolled in undergraduate programs to study in this institution. The number of teachers is about 169. The University has continued to expand over the last few years.

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (Bengali: শেরেবাংলা কৃষি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, Sher-e-Bangla Krishi Bishshobiddaloy) or SAU (শেকৃবি) is the oldest agricultural institution in Bangladesh and South Asia. It is situated in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. It was established on 11 December 1938 as Bengal Agricultural Institute (BAI) and later upgraded to a university in 2001 renaming it as Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. The university plays a role in agricultural research and development (R&D) of the region through the creation of knowledge, agricultural technology generation and transfer, crop diversification and intensification for the benefit of farming communities. SAU offers undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. degrees through the course credit system.
